Summary Explanation and Background:

This item requests Board approval of a resolution recognizing May 7, 2026, as a Day of Prayer in Brevard County, in conjunction with the 75th consecutive observance of the National Day of Prayer.

The National Day of Prayer has deep historical roots dating back to 1775, when the First Continental Congress first called for a day of prayer. It was later reaffirmed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 and formally established as an annual observance by Congress in 1952. In 1988, the observance was designated to occur each year on the first Thursday in May.

Additionally, longstanding tradition and legal precedent, including decisions of the United States Supreme Court, recognize prayer as a permissible and customary element of public governmental proceedings.

This year’s national theme, “Glorify God Among the Nations; Seeking Him in All Generations,” reflects an invitation for individuals and communities to come together in prayer across generations.

The resolution recognizes the National Day of Prayer as an opportunity for residents to reflect, give thanks, and seek guidance, while acknowledging the role that faith and shared values play for many in the community. It also encourages citizens to observe the day in a manner meaningful to them.

Adoption of this resolution is ceremonial in nature and affirms Brevard County’s recognition of this longstanding national observance.
