Summary Explanation and Background:
Counties within the State of Florida assume financial responsibility for the disposition of unclaimed or indigent people who perish within their boundaries. The Board of County Commissioners approved a policy for the Indigent Cremation Program on December 15, 2015, and a subsequent amendment on May 3, 2016. This policy provides for cremation and burial services, in accordance with Florida Statute 406, Part II and by Resolution. Administration of this program is through the Housing and Human Services Department's Community Action Agency (CAA).
Currently, the CAA determines eligibility for the Indigent Cremation Program and authorizes the burial or cremation of eligible persons per the policy. The County has reimbursed the same rates ($450 for cremations, $600 for burials, and up to $600 for burial at a Department of Veterans Affairs approved National Cemetery) for more than 20 years. The main purpose of this revision is to address the amount the County reimburses for cremations and burials plus adding a definition and associated fee. Specifically:
