Summary Explanation and Background:

This item is a resolution recognizing the Brevard County Citizens Academy for its longstanding contribution to civic engagement and public understanding of county government.

Established in 2001, the Citizens Academy was created to foster open communication between residents and their local government while providing participants with a comprehensive overview of county operations, services, and opportunities for involvement. Over the past 25 years, the program has engaged hundreds of residents and has been recognized locally for its value to the community.

The program is offered annually as a seven-week session held in February and March, with enrollment announced through the UF/IFAS Extension office. The most recent class concluded on March 12, and the board is pleased to recognize and congratulate this year’s Citizens Academy graduates who have been invited to attend and be recognized today.

Participant feedback demonstrates that the program increases knowledge of county functions, strengthens confidence in communicating with government officials, and encourages ongoing civic participation.

Since 2016, the program has been delivered in partnership with the UF/IFAS Extension Office, enhancing the curriculum through a combination of research-based education and practical, real-world insight into local government operations. The board also acknowledges the many dedicated county staff members who contribute their time and expertise to this program, helping educate participants on how their departments operate and the services they provide to our community.

This resolution recognizes the Citizens Academy as a valuable program that contributes to a more informed community and commends its role in providing education on county government operations and services throughout Brevard County.
