Summary Explanation and Background:

Per the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), 2025 marks the 40th annual Parks and Recreation Month.  According to their 2024 Engagement With Parks Report, people place a high value on the programs and services that park and recreation agencies deliver to their local communities every day, and strongly support their mission.  The report states that ninety-three percent of U.S. adults say their mental health is improved by these services and local park and recreation agencies provide spaces, programs, and services that are essential to a community’s vitality.  They also serve as key factors in advancing health equity, improving individual and community-level health outcomes, and enhancing quality of life.

In Brevard, for Fiscal Year 2024 (October 1, 2023 - September 30, 2024):

More than 1.4 million people (duplicated) attended programs, activities, or educational opportunities sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department (P&R) including at the Environmentally Endangered Lands sanctuaries,

Recreation Partners and Instructors registered 95,966 individuals (duplicated) for their programs in P&R facilities and reported more than 1.1 million in attendance,

1,946 children participated in youth camps and accounted for 43,606 attendance days,

20,599 reservations were made across three campgrounds (Manatee Hammock, Wickham Park, and Long Point Campgrounds) totaling 54,795 stays,

The Adaptive Recreation Program served 949 individuals, and

9,953 reservations were made for facility rentals.

Staff representing the Parks and Recreation Department will accept the Resolution.
