Recommendation

It is requested that the Board of County Commissioners approve the resolution to acknowledge, memorialize, and celebrate the month of February 2020 as “Black History Month” in Brevard County.

Summary Explanation and Background:

Black History Month is an annual observance to honor and memorialize the achievements of black Americans in every area of feat and victory throughout history.

Recognition to Americans, such as Harry T. Moore, who was an educator, a pioneer leader of the civil rights movement, and the founder of the first branch of the NAACP in Brevard County, Florida.

This resolution is to affirm this observance in Brevard County.

The County has also created a “Diversity Team” of county department staff members with different ethnic backgrounds who meet on a weekly basis to plan out activities in the workplace throughout the year in effort to sustain the awareness of our diverse community.  Activities from honoring Veterans, celebrating Hispanic History Month, to Black History Month throughout February with a presentation on “African Americans and The Vote” happening on March 6, 2020, from 11:00 to 1:00 in the Commission Room.
