It is requested that the Board of County Commissioners approve and authorize the Chair to sign an Interlocal Agreement with the Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency for the purpose of providing, installing and maintaining Bus Shelters, Bus Benches and Amenities in Merritt Island.

Summary Explanation and Background:

Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency has approached Space Coast Area Transit to create a partnership to provide and maintain Bus Shelters, Bus Benches and Amenities in Merritt Island.

Space Coast Area Transit receives Federal Capital Grants for the purchase and installation of bus shelters, benches and transit amenities, however, the cost for maintenance and upkeep are not eligible expenses. Therefore, Space Coast Area Transit has formed partnerships with several municipalities and agencies where the Transit Department funds the purchase of the shelters, benches and amenities through Federal Capital grants and the municipalities cover the maintenance and general upkeep costs of the stops.

Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency has requested specific transit amenities that are not typically included in the agreements with other agencies or municipalities; such as, Bike Racks, Solar Lighting, Big Belly Transit Cans and Bike Stations. Therefore, Merritt Island Redevelopment Agency is providing Brevard County with a not to exceed amount of $120,000 towards the competition of these bus shelters. The initial phase of the project will be the placement of four transit shelters with amenities, with a minimum of one additional shelter when further funding becomes available.
